English Sailor Moon

Opening 1

Music: Sailor Moon Theme
Aired: The whole first two seasons of the Japanese series dubbed into English.

While almost every language version of the Sailor Moon anime used a completely different song for each release, those involved with the English language adaption decided to keep the Japanese theme, "Moonlight Romance", up the rock and rewrite the lyrics for an English speaking audience and move the song's focus from romance and destiny to the more superhero aspect of the Sailor Moon saga.

The result was a tv theme song that almost anyone, even those who don't even call themselves "Moonies" remember the lyrics to, or at the very least the melody.

The Sailor Moon Theme was written by Andy Heyward with vocals performed by Nicole Price and Brynne Price. It proved so popular that it was used for the English language versions of all three Sailor Moon movies and eventually the third and fourth seasons, Sailor Moon S and Sailor Moon SuperS.
It has been released in it's regular tv sized version on the first two English Sailor Moon soundtracks, Sailor Moon and Lunarock.

For the third soundtrack, The Full Moon Collection that was released after S and SuperS had been released, something special was done to the theme song, two different remixes were produced, The S.A.F. Remix (with a runtime of 3mins 15sec) and the much longer S.A.F. Club Mix (running for 6mins and 48secs). Both remixed the English theme song with an original track as if for a club and opinions are split among fans. Personally I love them.

The Sailor Moon Theme Song had proven so popular even after the show had finished airing that several bands even sung their own versions for inclusion on their albums completely separate from any advertising for the show. The most recent example that comes to mind is The Chubbies.

As for the footage used for the English opening, the producers used clips from several of the opening credits for the Japanese version (it had multiple opening credits for the first season) as well as clips from the show itself. To add a little extra something, they incorporated special effect transitions and digital framing which were also added to the English episodes themselves.

Naturally at the end of the credits the English Sailor Moon logo appears instead of the Japanese one which was rather boring in appearance (basically just the show's name in writing). The English logo bounces in from the viewer and positions itself (just after the Scouts and moonkitties have jumped into place) for a final title screen pose.
