3rd gen english sailor moon manga written in green text with a rainbow shadow.

The Sailor Moon Eternal Edition series is the English release of the Japanese "kanzenban" (or "complete") edition. It is not a new continuation of the series, simply the third release of the same Sailor Moon manga we've all come to know and love.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal Edition

This third generation of the Sailor Moon manga, like its Japanese equivalent, features a larger page size, new cover artworks by Naoko Takeuchi, 10 volumes for the main storyline and short stories (which are intermingled throughout and not separate volumes,) and two volumes for Codename: Sailor V.

The Sailor Moon Eternal Edition manga volumes feature a brand new English translation that's completely different than the one used in the second gen English release by Kodansha and the first gen English release by TokyoPop.

On this page, you'll find links for where to buy the Sailor Moon manga, my personal reviews, images, and videos of the Eternal Edition issues, plus answers to some of the common questions Sailor Moon fans often ask about this version.

The Sailor Moon Eternal Edition manga has an entirely new English translation with more natural dialogue and a better quality script overall. Physically, this release of the manga features more colour pages compared to previous versions, a higher quality paper stock, and firmer covers (though not hardcover.)

Why Are There Two English Versions of Sailor Moon?

There are currently three official English versions of the Sailor Moon manga. The first generation release was done by TokyoPop in the early-2000's, the second by Kodansha several years later, and the third (the Eternal Edition and Naoko Takeuchi Collection releases) also by Kodansha a decade or so after that.

The different English releases of the Sailor Moon manga are typically adaptions of re-releases of the manga in Japan and aren't solely original product initiatives for English-speaking fans. Each re-release features several unique changes ranging from slightly redrawn comic panels and new cover artwork made by Naoko Takeuchi to reorganising of the chapters and the shuffling of the short stories (stand-alone plots that aren't connected to the main storylines) into separate volumes or adding them back into the main volumes.

Do the Eternal Editions Include the Short Stories?

Yes, the Sailor Moon Eternal Editions do include the popular short stories. Unlike the second generation release which collected these stories into two stand-alone Short Stories volumes, the third generation Eternal Edition includes them in their original print order as part of the main 10 volumes.

Is Sailor Moon Eternal Manga?

Sailor Moon Eternal is a pair of anime movies while Sailor Moon Eternal Edition is the official name given to the third generation re-release of the Sailor Moon manga or comic book series.
